Project Description

The construction and renovation company responsible for restoring large parts of the Republic of Cameroon’s Washington, DC Embassy, which had been damaged by a significant fire, subcontracted us to restore the finishes and gilding on the walls and ceilings of the Ambassador’s Office, the Ballroom, and parts of the Main Entrance.

Our work in the Ambassador’s Office and the Ballroom included the surface preparation of all walls, which had been repaired and stripped of all previous coatings. Glazing the prepared surfaces, using a combination of techniques, including scumbling, dragging, and stippling, plus hand-wiping selected highlights.

Last, but not least, we gilded selected highlights on the carved wood details and fully gilded several built-in side tables using Dutch metal, to which we then applied multiple protective clear coats over the gilding to prevent oxidation and adjust the sheen.

Our work both inside and outside the Main Entrance consisted of gilding selected highlights on the wrought iron rails of the main staircase and the wrought iron front gate, plus scumbling, dragging, stippling, plus hand-wiping selected highlights of the main entryway and second-floor entry hall.
